A Son's Advice: Spoons on Saturday

A Son's Advice: Spoons on Saturday

YakGear Brand Ambassador Jeff Malott knows a thing or two about bad tournament day advice. He also knows how elusive good fish can be on tournament day. But, just ask Jeff, when they hit - THEY HIT! We talked to Jeff about his most memorable day on the water - thanks to the timely tournament advice of his son.

Jeff's Most Memorable Day on the Water Since I started kayak fishing there have been so many great memories made - it is hard to pick out just one. But, I'm a tournament junkie. So, it has to be last season's KBS Open on Table Rock Lake in Missouri. Table Rock fits my style of fishing because it is on the White River chain of lakes. In fact, as a branch of the White River chain, it shares a lot of similarities to another White River impoundment Beaver Lake which happens to be my "home lake." I was excited to find out that a national series was stopping so close to home and immediately began making plans to get there. Although it is only a couple hours away I had never fished Table Rock from the kayak and would only have two days of pre-fishing up there prior to game day. Luckily, my son Justin lived near Table Rock the past few years while playing basketball at a small college up there. He was my lone source of info outside of a few fishing reports. With his insight, he swore I would win the event if I listened to him.  I took his advice and on tournament day had a solid limit early and was sitting in 3rd place by noon. Needing to move up against a strong leaderboard, I thought back to him telling me to use a spoon at the boat docks, even though that was not a comfortable technique for me.  I tied on a flutter spoon in the last hour of the tournament and culled two fish. I won by less than an inch. Hoisting the trophy felt good. Holding the $3,000 check felt better. And knowing my best fishing buddy put me on them felt the best! PS. The spoon is now one of my go-to lures!
